Audio and videophiles rejoice! The widely anticipated, THX-Ultra certified DV-S939 is here. Its a masterful player that blends the ultra-high frequency response of DVD-Audio with the video precision of progressive-scan – to take your audio/visual senses to new heights and forever change the way you experience music and movies. Comprehensively designed to perform flawlessly now and well into the future, the DV-S939 is fitted with high-end 192 kHz/24-bit DACs to faithfully reproduce 192-kHz 2-channel stereo, or loss-free 96-kHz 5.1-channel surround sound. Theres an RS-232 port for easy upgrades and full home-automation control. An IEEE 1394 slot allows you to upgrade to convenient, universal, high-speed, digital connection capability. The DB-25 port gives you single-cable multichannel hook-up to receivers like the TX-DS989. Plus the 6-channel RCA output, two gold-plated component outputs, and four digital outputs give you total connection flexibility. Equally impressive is the DV-S939s build quality. Two oversized transformers keep the power supply separate for the digital and analog sections. A heavy-duty mechanical tray door and disc tray reduce vibration and provide greater signal purity. And large high-grade capacitors deliver ample power reserves.

Compatibility and Specifications

DVD Audio: DVD audio is a new audio format with better audio than standard audio CDs or video DVDs. Although this particular unit is a “universal” player and is downward compatible with video DVDs and audio CDs, a DVD audio disc must be played on a DVD audio player. Although this particular unit will also output video, it is possible to have a DVD audio unit that does not have a video output and which would be used as an audio unit only. When playing back a video DVD or audio CD this unit acts like a standard DVD video player. When playing back a DVD audio disc the audio can be recorded at up to 192kHz/24 bit in 2-channel mode or it can be recorded at up to 96kHz/24 bit in up to 6-channels, using linear PCM with uncompressed data (unlike Dolby Digital or DTS which compresses the data). DVD audio allows each channel’s sampling rate and quantization bit-depth to be set independently, so you could have the three front channels set to 96kHz/24 bit while the two surround channels and subwoofer channels are set to 48kkHz/16 bit or any other variation. The total playing time of the disc depends on the sampling rate and bit depth, so a single DVD audio disc could hold up to 400 minutes of 2-channel audio at 44.1kHz/16 bit, or up to 74 minutes of 6-channel audio at 96kHz/24-bit or 2-channel audio at 192kHz/24 bit. Note that in addition to audio, a DVD audio disc can contain still video or full motion video, so DVD audio discs in the future have the potential of displaying artist bios, lyrics, and other interactive information. Although the best sound from a DVD audio disc is obtained when connecting the unit to a component with 5.1 channel input, it can be used with a stereo amplifier, TV or other non-multi-channel receiver since multi-channel sound can be down-mixed to stereo by the unit. When playing a DVD audio disc, all digital output from the unit is downsampled.

The following types of discs can be played:

DVD Audio: 5″ or 3″
DVD: 5″ or 3″ single sided, single layer, NTSC, (“Region 1” or “All Region” DVDs only)
DVD: 5″ or 3″ single sided, double layer, NTSC, (“Region 1” or “All Region” DVDs only)
DVD: 5″ or 3″ double sided, double layer, NTSC, (“Region 1” or “All Region” DVDs only)
CD Audio: 5″ or 3″
Video CD: 5″ or 3″
CD-RW: 5″ or 3″
CD-R: 5″ or 3″
Frequency Response:

DVD (at 48 kHz sampling frequency): 4 Hz to 22 kHz
DVD (at 96 kHz sampling frequency): 4 Hz to 44 kHz
DVD (at 192 kHz sampling frequency): 4 Hz to 96 kHz
THD: Less than 0.002%

Features

THX Ultra Certification: This unit has been built and tested to conform to the high standards of sound and build quality set by the THX Ultra Certification program.

DVD Audio: DVD Audio is a new multi-channel format used for high resolution audio recording. This unit can decode and play DVD Audio discs with a sampling rate up to 192 kHz with a 24-bit word length.

Progressive Scan: Progressive-scan video has less flicker and fewer motion artifacts than the traditional interlaced-scanning method, resulting in a superior picture. To take advantage of this feature, you must have a television with a progressive scan input.

Built-In Dolby Digital Decoder: This unit is equipped with a built-in Dolby Digital decoder with bass management. The 5.1 channel outputs are for use with 5.1 channel ready receivers.

DTS/MPEG2 Compatibility: In addition to standard DVDs, this unit can play DTS DVDs and CDs. This unit is also capable of outputting the MPEG2 digital bitstream.

192kHz/24 bit D/A converter: This unit includes a 192kHz/24 bit D/A converter for playback of high resolution audio through the analog audio outputs.
